  7.     In public, Japan's energetic new Prime Minister Toshiki
  8. Kaifu favors polka-dot ties and baseball games. But in private,
  9. according to a letter written to a minor functionary in 1983,
  10. he has more celestial concerns. He acknowledged in the letter
  11. that he was a UFO buff, one who had looked for unidentified
  12. flying objects on trips to Australia, the South Pole and
  13. Switzerland. Alas, he spotted no flying saucers, but, he wrote,
  14. "I'll live on with hopes of . . . encountering a UFO some day."
  15. The Prime Minister has a leg up on that wish. His cousin Norio
  16. Kaifu is an astronomer.
